During the PhD

PhD candidates' rights

Doctoral contracts, labour law, unions, and free or paid legal contacts if you run into problems during or after your PhD.

Legal support

AJC06 keeps a list of legal contacts to help PhD candidates with the problems they may face during or after their PhD:

  • Free services: specialised associations, university legal advice sessions, PhD peer-support platforms.
  • Paid services: lawyers specialised in labour law, research contracts or academic disputes.

To get this list or ask a question, write to us or contact us on social media: we will point you to the right resources.

Your rights under a doctoral contract

PhD candidates on a doctoral contract have rights similar to those of other employees under the French Labour Code: minimum salary, paid leave, respectful working conditions. These rights guarantee a fair and safe working environment, so that young researchers can focus on their research.

Why joining a union matters

Unions play a crucial role in defending PhD candidates’ interests. By joining one, you make your voice heard, take part in discussions on research policy and help improve your working conditions.

Unions such as CGT FERC Sup, FSU and SUD offer valuable support and a framework to organise collectively.
