During the PhD

Funding your PhD

Doctoral school contracts, regional grants, CIFRE agreements and other discipline-specific funding.

Funding opportunities for your PhD, whether you are just starting your research or looking for resources to keep going.

Doctoral school contracts

Funded for three, two or one year, they usually take the form of an employment contract, are awarded on the basis of the doctoral project and come with a monthly salary. Some require a collaboration with a company, others are specific to a field.

Ask the doctoral schools (websites in French):

Regional “Emplois jeunes doctorants” grants

The Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region co-funds doctoral contracts. Applications go through Université Côte d’Azur: ask your doctoral school.

CIFRE agreements

The CIFRE scheme (industrial agreements for training through research) subsidises any French company, association or local authority that hires a PhD candidate to work at the heart of a research collaboration with a public laboratory. The work leads to a thesis defence within three years.

Other funding

Other funding, specific to each discipline, also exists. Ask your doctoral school:
